Liisu,
Tammsaare’s Park, Tallinn

There are some summer basics I always like, for example these shoes. I bought these a while ago, but they still look great. This summer I might wear more dresses: I just yesterday bought this floral one.

Estonia blvd, Tallinn

I recently made this dress. This summer I really love maxi dresses. Luckily I found this fabric that my mum bought a couple of years ago; recently I rarely find nice fabrics from shops.

Katrin,
Aia str, Tallinn

I really like clothes and shopping. I’m especially into all kinds of accessories: unique earrings, bags, shoes, just name it. If I find something nice, I’ll buy it. Usually I wear more colourful clothes, but today black dominates.

Liina,
Estonia Blvd, Tallinn

I just recently got back from London, where I interned at Louis de Gama. At the moment people in London are obsessed with Bob Dylan and 80’s. Everything around me affects me, but I especially get many ideas from books. I make most of my clothes and this jacket with fur is also something I made.

Triin,
Tammsaare’s Park, Tallinn

I’m in middle with my ERKI collection and it is going to reflect my current obsession with knitted materials. This summer one-piece items and jumpsuits are a basic in my wardrobe. I’m also a big fan of black colour, though, sometimes my friends complain that I look as if I was going to a funeral 24/7.

Mattias,
Narva mnt, Tallinn

I just bought a second pair of white sneakers from a nearby second-hand. I’m currently into white sneakers and white shirts. I quite often shop at second-hands. This bag comes also from a Humana – people either hate it or love it. I listen to indie-music so it definitely affects me, but it is really hard to name a certain style-icon, because there aren’t many men whose style is very inspiring.

Britten,
Kakumäe, Tallinn

I’ve been in Tallinn just for couple of days. I spent some time in Barcelona and I’m still used to different kind of life rhythm. My style is always bit rock’n’roll and I like layers – simple outfits like jeans and t-shirt should be worn only at home. This bag is designed my one American tattoo artist. Other favourites are harem pants and these boots that I’m wearing today.

HEL-LOOKS in TALLINN

An exhibition of HEL-LOOKS' street style pictures was opened yesterday at Finnish Institute in Tallinn. HEL-LOOKS in one of the pioneers in street style phenomenon and therefore I wanted to meet up and chat with Liisa Jokinen, who is one of the co-authors if HEL-LOOKS, about her work, fashion and much more and I decided to share some points with you.
If you are in Tallinn, go and visit the exhibition at Soome Instituut/ Suomen Viron Instituutti ( Harju 1).
Ave

Liisa,
Town Hall Square, Tallinn

I really like second-hand clothes and when I travel I try to go to local shops. Normally I wear dresses and I love old Marimekko designs. I sometimes read Asian magazines, for example, Fruits for inspiration, because they always wear so unexpected cominations: long skirts with long jackets or au contraire really short dresses and jackets.
***
How much did you think about street style before you started with HEL-LOOKS?
"I remember taking some pictures of random people when I was 12 or 13, but I took these pictures secretly. First person who I stopped and asked for a picture was a lady in Amsterdam. I think it is my first official street style picture. Definitely I think more about street style now, but I have always liked fashion. However, I never wanted to be a designer so doing a street style site is a great alternative."
What is the role of street style for you?
"These pictures are not just snapshots. Each city and country has a distinct style. It is easy for me to recongize a Finnish or Swedish person in Tokyo or London, however, I can't point out what it is that is different. Maybe it is because I studied History that I see it as a very important way of documenting our time. It is a pity that people did not do it as much before."
Future plans?
"We hope to publish a HEL-LOOKS book some day and I'd love to have some longer interviews there with people, so we could find out more about the person and one's style. We also hope to travel the world with our exhibition and carry on taking pictures until we enjoy it. For me it is like an obession. Each pictures makes me really happy and gives me energy. "

Ester,
Tammsaare’s Park, Tallinn

I’m currently looking for a cool sweatshirt, but I doubt that I’ll find it here and therefore I need to go abroad or get it sewn. I used to wear a lot more feminine clothes, but this Spring I want to mix it with different looks, yet, I always try to have something feminine. I love sunglasses. I have so many sunglasses that I almost never wear, but I keep them, because they look so cool.

Britta Liisa,
Tammsaare’s Park, Tallinn

I like mixing different colours, prints and patterns. I get my clothes almost entirely from second-hands, but I sometimes also go to Reede. My favourite second-hand shops in Tallinn are USA Today and the one on Narva mnt. One thing I like about Estonian style is that it is rather easy to be different, but for some reason people are too afraid of that. Still there are some people, who always dress well, one is Rene Köster.

Silver,
Tammsaare’s Park, Tallinn

I buy most of my clothes from London, because there is a wider range of brands to choose from. One of my favourite shops there is Topman. Today I’m also wearing shoes from there. Ideas on what to buy and what to wear usually come while shopping when you see something that intrigues you. My favourite colour is black.

Daria,
Laikmaa str, Tallinn

Today I’m recovering from last night’s party and I didn’t pay much attention what I am wearing. I like wearing different colours together – it is so boring when people wear tone-on-tone outfits. People should be more creative and use their fantasy. I also love accessories, especially bags and rings. My favourite brand is Diesel.

Aino,
Viru centre, Tallinn

I like all kind of patterns. Usually more colourful ones, but black and white are also cool. My current obsessions are different vintage bags. I have got quite a few for this spring. I think my own style is mainly affected by my friends’ style and my mood. I usually shop abroad. If I’m in England, I always go to Topshop.

Olja,
Balti Jaam, Tallinn

I like clothes that have a nice pattern and I prefer colour. However, I’m not into all these clashing prints that could look bit tacky. I like when people look really different, because then it is more interesting to watch them. I really like Finnish street style. Today I’m wearing a jacket from Zara, shoes from some second-hand and bag from Accessorize.

Hendrik,
Kaubamaja st, Tallinn

I get inspired by music I listen in the morning, today I listened Justice so I ended up in this. I also like how some musicians dress, e.g. Pete Doherty. My current obsession is also Gucci’s spring collection. I shop in very different places: this jacket is from Humana, t-shirt is from Stockmann, sunglasses from H&M, jeans are my friend’s and sneakers are from Berlin.
